Endangered Species in Florida

Hawksbill Sea Turtle: The hawksbill is just one of five species of sea turtles that nest on Florida’s beaches. The hawksbill and all other species of sea turtle are on the IUCN Red List of Endangered Species, which gives them international protection. However, egg predation by other animals and humans is the number one threat to the survival of all sea turtle species. Even if this threat is removed, only 1 in 1000 hatchlings survive to maturity.

West Indian Manatee: The West Indian manatee is one of the most well-known endangered animal species of Florida, perhaps because they exist nowhere else in the US. More than 1,100 manatees died in 2021, a record high since the turn of the century, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC).

Florida Panther:Today approximately 120 panthers remain in Florida. The Florida panther is one of the most endangered animals in the world. The only known wild breeding population occurs in south Florida within the Big Cypress Swamp region.

Gopher Tortoise: The gopher tortoise is considered a keystone species in Florida. This means their presence in the ecosystem is a crucial factor in species diversity. According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), gopher tortoise burrows provide habitat and protection for as many as 400 other animal species! However, habitat loss due to development, capture for the pet or meat trade, disease, and relocation have caused their population numbers to dwindle.

Roseate Spoonbills: Displaying brilliant shades of pink and fuchsia that only a flamingo can match, the numbers of roseate spoonbills in Florida have been depleting rapidly. Egg and nestling predation by birds of prey, raccoons, and even fire ants are just one obstacle they face in replenishing their numbers, habitat loss and degradation are ongoing threats.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]
