What’s Wrong with Florida’s Waterways?

Ongoing water pollution and harmful algal blooms, including red tides and toxic blue-green algae, are putting public health at risk and causing massive die-offs of fish, marine life and sea turtles.. Florida’s algae-plagued water are a result of an excess in nitrogen and phosphorus leaching into water bodies. These come from two main sources: fertilizer that washes off agricultural fields and lawns, and wastewater leaching from failing septic tanks and malfunctioning sewer systems.

How can we stop algae blooms in Florida?

In order to mitigate harmful algal blooms in the future, we need to restore clean freshwater flows to estuaries and coastal habitats, improve water quality by reducing pollution (including nutrient pollution) and put an end to the human activities that are contributing to harmful algal blooms.

Returning the consistent, natural, southerly flows of freshwater from Lake Okeechobee are fundamental to fully restoring the natural flow of water into the everglades. Full Everglades restoration funding is desperately needed. Today, that opportunity has never been more realistic. Save Natural Florida is doing everything possible to help raise awareness and support for this cause and play an integral role in restoring Florida’s clean waterways for everyone to enjoy.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]
